Summary
A baby's cream wool cloak, lined with cotton material of a different weave and carrying two highly decorative capes (circa 1900 to circa 1910). The cloak fastens with two pairs of silk ties. The smaller top cape, which on fastening would create a collar, has two lines of lace and a frill of cut work and embroidery with a floral pattern and a scalloped edge. The larger lower cape has two bands of similar floral embroidery, a separated three band pintuck and the same pattern scalloped edge. The larger cape and the cloak are both gathered at the top underneath. The bottom of the cloak has a simple hem. The cream colour has darkened with time, is soiled, and the woollen outer shows considerable amounts of moth damage but no evidence of the perpetrators.
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Mr and Mrs M. Downing in August 1984.
