Summary
A baby's or child's quilted white cotton bodice or staybodice (circa 1850 to circa 1900) . It is straight topped, slightly peaked at the waist, and at the arm-hole there are two tapes for support over the shoulder. It is possible that the fabric was 'ready quilted' when purchased. The buttons may have been added at a later date. At the waist there are six brass linen covered buttons to which other garments would attach. At the rear are three pairs of fastening tapes. There are numerous signs of darn and patch repairs.
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Mr and Mrs M. Downing in August 1984.
