In the Royal Collection. . 2. Mary Darby, Mrs Thomas Robinson, ‘Perdita’ (1758-1800) after Thomas Gainsborough RA (Sudbury 1727 - London 1788). Two reproduced coloured prints of paintings by Thomas Gainsborough. One, 'The Duke and Duchess of Cumberland', is oval-shaped, mounted on a rectangular piece of card. It shows three people in period costume, the Duke and Duchess standing arm in arm and a lady seated. The Duke is wearing a black hat and a red coat with tails, with a silver coloured medal, black knee-length breeches, white stockings and black shoes. He has a white lace cravat and cuffs and a beige waistcoat. He is carrying a long cane in his right hand and the Duchess's arm is linked to his left arm. The Duchess is wearing a white, long dress with a low, rounded neckline, a tight bodice and a frilled, layered skirt with a train at the back. There is lace on the neckline, cuffs and on the frills. She has a cream straw hat decorated with blue lace and white gloves. Seated behind them is a fair-haired lady in a pink dress with white lace on the high collar and cuffs. She is wearing a cream straw hat decorated with ribbons and feathers. A small brown and white dog is beside the duke. There is a stone monument among the trees in the background. The artist and title are written in pencil on the back. The second 'Mrs. Robinson and Perdita', is rectangular shaped and is of a lady with a dog. She is wearing a pink dress with white frills round the low neckline, around the cuffs and down the skirt. A large, blue bow decorates the bodice front and she has a small ribbon hat on her grey hair. She is holding a handkerchief in her left hand and a dark coloured object in her right hand. A white and light-brown collie type dog is seated beside her. The background is woodland. The artist and title are written in pencil on the back. Total number of items is 2.
