Summary
A letter from Emma Constable to her cousin Richard Richardson of Capenhurst, near Chester, dated 16.12.1819. The letter is handwritten in ink on both sides of a sheet of cream coloured paper. On the front left-hand side is Richard Richardson's name and address. The letter is folded to form an envelope and a seal is fixed to the centre fold, having been cut from the edge. The letter requests the rent money by Christmas Day, details finances- an old lady pays one shilling and sixpence for half a bed for lodging. Emma now has a shop and deals in `cloths---which are cast off'. She is sorry to hear of the riots `at your part of the world' it is dreadful that poor people should listen to the rebellious principle. Emma sends good wishes for Christmas and the New Year and hopes your answer to this letter will be in your own hand writing'. Written in another hand on the front of the letter are several numbers, dates, names and amounts and `sent Mrs. Constable the above 3---'/ 21 Dec 1819. The words `Derbyshire Museum Service' are impressed on the corner of the letter.
