Summary
A letter from Emma Constable to her cousin, Richard Richardson of Capenhurst near Chester, dated 25.9.1817. It is handwritten in ink on both sides of cream coloured paper. On the front left-hand side is the name and address of Richard Richardson. Three numbered items are written across the address, possibly bank note numbers. The letter is folded to form an envelope and a seal cut away from the edge is affixed to the centrefold. Emma thanks her cousin and his brother for their gift and states that she has hardly any work, is considering working as an Upper Nurse, in a family, or as a preparatory governess `but who will take me if I can't make a respectable appearance'. She received no help from relations in London, does not know her daughter's addresses although Emma visits. Her son finally visits, is working but is changing his employer `the wages is to be 36 pounds a year'. Emma receives a perplexing call that her brother has made a contract of marriage for her with George Jones. `I told her it must be a great mistake.... it was quite ridiculous, I want to spend the remainder of my days in peace and tranquillity'. Final request for money ` next Monday being Michaelmas day'.
