Summary
A turned wooden simple 'poupard' type doll (1960s). It has a long cylinder shaped body, with no arms or legs. Its body is a mixture of the colouring of the wood and green. There are dots and flowers on its body. The head is rounded and has eyes, nose and a red dot for its mouth painted on. It also has some hair painted on. On the underneath of the doll there are two painted inscriptions. One has been done in red and is Japanese writing in a square frame, and the other is a line of Japanese writing done in black ink. These Japanese toys and other objects were given as gifts to the donor when she visited Japan on a lecture tour. She had written an autobiographical book (in the 1960s) which had been translated into Japanese so she was well known there
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Miss Eileen Colwell in October 1991.
