Summary
Print, Jean Monet (1867-1913) on His Hobby Horse after Claude Monet (Paris 1840 - Giverny 1926). A print of the oil painting, Jean Monet on His Hobby Horse painted in 1872 (signed and dated) and now in the Metropoliatn Museum of Art, New York. Monet and Camille's first son, Jean (1867-1913), was born in 1867. The little boy appeared in several of Monet's paintings during the family's early residence in Argenteuil. In a fond glimpse of Jean's childhood rather than a formal portrait, Monet has depicted his son atop a favourite toy, playing in the privacy of the family's garden. Monet never exhibited the painting but kept it throughout his life. The scene depicts a young child on a three wheeled beige horse. The child wears a hat and, possibly, a beige pinafore, a white shirt and black ankle boots. Behind the child are flowers and greenery. The artist's signature appears in the bottom right hand corner.
