Summary

Parts of two separate child's tea services originally stored inside a gas mask box. One is white with a dark blue rim decorated with gold coloured foliate transfer decoration. This set comprises three cups, three saucers and a milk jug with a poorly repaired handle. The other tea service comprises only of a teapot with lid. Both of these are cream in colour with orange handle and knob. The sides of the teapot are fluted and have a pink rose transfer decoration. The cardboard box for a gas mask is rectangular and brown. Impressed into the hinged lid is the word ‘Top’. The exterior of the box is badly stained. Printed on the inside of the lid is 'Packing Of Respirator. The Respirator should be placed in a box with heavy end (container) standing on bottom of box. The transparent eyepiece should lie evenly on the top of the container and at full length without any deformation. When Respirator Is Required For Use. 1. Hold respirator by the straps. 2. Put on by first putting chin into the facepiece and then draw the straps over the head. Adjust the straps to obtain close but com-fortable fit. 3. Take off by pulling the straps over the head from the back. Do Not Take Respirator Off By Pulling The Container Upwards Over The Face'. Total number of items is 10.

Provenance

Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Mrs Bradshaw in September 1980.
