Summary
A cylindrical vacuum cleaner which has a long metal tube handle with a wooden knob on the top. The body of the cleaner is made from a red metal cylinder which has the gold lettering on the back and front reading 'Star Vacuum Cleaner, Pat.18899/11'. The star symbol appears in gold and black in between the words 'Star' and 'Vacuum Cleaner'. Attached to the cylinder at the top is a thick white fabric concertina mechanism which is attached to a metal tube which in turn fits over the main handle. When this tube is pulled upwards (over the handle) the concertina expands creating a suction effect. Below the cylinder is another metal tube which has a wide metal 'mouth' piece attached to the bottom. Dirt is sucked up through this 'mouth' piece and tube. The base of the cylinder is wooden (gold painted) and can be removed by means of a metal screw catch.
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Mrs F. Davey in 1973.
Marks and inscriptions
