Summary

Two tin plate train locomotives with tenders; part of a larger train set. Both are made by different toy manufacturers; Hornby and Chad Valley, although both are painted green and are similar in design. The Hornby locomotive is painted black at the front, with a black front funnel, open at the top. The cab and the base are also painted black. The main body of the engine is painted a dark green with four black horizontal stripes. The second funnel is painted green. The cab has two silver coloured painted windows with the number '60985' inscribed in silver coloured print below. The cab is open at the back with various dials and levers printed on it in silver coloured print along with manufacturing details. Also at the back is a lever. The underneath of the locomotive has four grey painted wheels and various cogs. The tender for the Hornby locomotive is open at the top and painted black inside with four black wheels below. The sides are inscribed with a British Railways logo consisting of a yellow lion on top of a red circle with the name intersecting it. Manufacturing details, 'Hornby Made in England by Meccano Ltd', are printed on the back in black ink. The Chad Valley locomotive is painted a lighter green. The front of the locomotive is painted black with 'Chad Valley' and 'Made in England' printed in two separate yellow sections. The second funnel is painted yellow and the green painted cab has two black windows on each side, with the number '3402' printed in yellow below. Various dials are painted at the back. The tender is painted the same green with 'British Railways' printed on the sides in yellow. The manufacturer is, again, given at the back. Played with by the donor - circa 1950 to circa 1955. The sets could possibly made around 1940. Total number of items is 4.
