Summary

A large 'Martha Chase Doll Company' stockinette doll (circa 1910) named 'Pricella' who was given to Elizabeth Stain when she was two years old. Her companion 'Uncle Bruin' is recorded separately as inventory number 671303. Notes on the paperwork read - 'Given to Mrs Sainty's (donor) sister Elizabeth Stain when she was two years old in circa 1910. 'Uncle Bruin' and 'Pricella' have been clasped arm-in-arm for the last 85 years or so'. 'Uncle Bruin' and 'Pricella' are never to be separated.' 'A 'Lenci doll' was given to the donor (inventory number 661638) Virginia Sainty at the same time as Pricella was given to her sister Elizabeth. The donor states 'I was given 'Chloe' but found her stiff and not very lovable.' Doll experts Dorothy and Evelyn Coleman visited the museum on 23rd May 1994. They believe 'Pricella' to be possibly a 'Chase Stockinette doll', made in Pawtucket, USA'. Martha Chase Doll Company 1889 -1970s. She has painted fabric head, hands, arms, legs and feet and a cloth body. There is a hole at the back of the head through which is seen a fabric covered stuffed base covered with kapok and another layer of painted hair which has cracked. The doll has moulded ears and nose, and painted mouth, eyes and eyebrows. The elbow and knee joints are stitched. The paint on the fingers is badly worn. The arms are partly detached from the body at the shoulders. The doll is wearing an outer cream silk coat with lace edged collar and sleeves, pin tucks at hem and fastened with three pearl buttons. underneath is a white, flower-sprigged cotton, short-sleeved dress with attached half petticoat and red edged muslin frill at the hem, neck and sleeve, and a back zip. Under this is a cotton petticoat with cotton insertion and embroidered edging at the hem. The petticoat has a draw string at the waist and is fastened by two buttons at back. Under the petticoat is a pair of lace trimmed cotton drawers. On the doll's feet are cream kid shoes trimmed with dark cream braid and tied with white ribbon, and cream silk socks. An embroidered net cream bonnet is on the doll's head, tied with a worn cream silk tie. Around her neck is a metal necklace.
