Summary
One of the puppets made for and used by the ‘Lilliput Marionette Theatre’. This marionette has been identified as a 'witch' and is from a play entitled 'Hansel and Gretel'. Her head is composition over a metal frame with a wooden body arms and legs. Her hands are made out of composition over metal. She is jointed at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, knees and ankles with metal. The witch has painted and moulded facial features with a white face with a pointed nose and red lips with a black tooth. She has real grey hair with two long sideboards and a goatee beard. Her pointed black hat, bent at the top, is a stiff black material with a silver coloured buckle. She is wearing a black bodice with a stiff white collar, a long black synthetic net dress with a shorter red overskirt. Around the waist is tied a white cotton apron. Her shoes are black painted wood with a white buckle. Heels may have been attached to the shoes because there are four drill holes on each.
Provenance
