Summary
A 1960s plastic Peggy Nisbet doll from her 'Scottish Historical Figures' or 'Historical Dolls' series portraying Mary Beaton (1543-1598), one of Mary Queen of Scots' attendants. Series number H.246. She has light brown hair and moulded and painted facial features. She wears a black close fitting hat with a long snood, decorated with a gold band and small pearls. Her orange satin overdress has a square neckline edged with white and gold braid and filled in with a white gauze frill. The bodice comes to a point at the waist. The tight long sleeves in yellow satin edged with white lace have large gold cuffs. The orange satin skirt is pleated at the back to fall in a long train and caught at the front with yellow edging and gold tassels. The overdress is open at the front to show a gold panel. She has two yellow satin petticoats and a cream linen one. She has painted on shoes and stands on a grey metal plinth with a coil spring to hold her feet. Printed on a label on her arm is 'Collectors Costume Dolls by Peggy Nisbet, Made in Scotland, H 246, Scottish Historical Figures, Mary Beaton'.
