Summary
A 1960s plastic Peggy Nisbet doll from her 'Scottish Historical Figures' or 'Historical Dolls' series portraying Mary Queen of Scots (1542–1587). Series number H.209. The doll is made of plastic and the head, body and legs are moulded in one piece with the arms jointed at the shoulders. She has painted facial features and short, brown, curly hair. She is wearing a long, black velvet dress with a full-gathered skirt. It has long sleeves edged with white lace at the wrists and a black net insert at the top of the bodice. She is wearing a two-layered white lace rufflette collar and a long lace-edged cream man-made fabric cloak with a cream lace-edged padded collar. She has a long black chain round her waist with a small heart-shape medallion fastened to the front of the skirt with a cross at the bottom end of the chain. She has three fairly stiff cream cotton underskirts and the black velvet dress skirt is lined with black net. She is wearing a black velvet cap, pointed at the front, and edged all round with white lace. The doll has a rectangular metal stand with a metal spring under which the doll's feet fit to enable it to stand upright. Printed on a label is 'Collectors Costume Dolls by Peggy Nisbet, Made in Scotland' and 'Scottish Historical Costumes, H/209, Mary Queen of Scots, Beheaded at Fotheringay Castle, 1587'.
