Summary
A 1960s plastic Peggy Nisbet doll from her 'Scottish Historical Figures' or 'Historical Dolls' series portraying Mary Fleming (Lady Maitland), a Lady-in-waiting to Mary Queen of Scots. Series number H.629. She has painted and moulded facial features and dark brown hair covered by a close fitting black velvet hat decorated with gold and with braid at the crown and front edge with two pearl and three blue jewels attached. Her stiff blue and silver dress has a tight fitting bodice with a large white muslin shawl. The coller is edged with white lace and gold braid. The bodice comes to a point at the front of the waist. The long sleeves in cream with gold scrolling fabric, edges in lace, have large pointed cuffs in white fur backed with the blue and silver fabric. The skirt is pleated at the back to form cream and gold fabric. This is attached to a gold satin petticoat lined with white net. Beneath this is a straight satin petticoat and beneath this is a straight white linen petticoat. She has flat black shoes painted on her feet, which stand in an oval grey metal plinth with a coiled spring across her feet. In her hand is a red and gold label. On the outside of this it reads 'Collectors Costume Dolls by Peggy Nisbet, Made in Scotland'. Inside it reads 'Lady-in-Waiting to Mary Queen of Scots, H629, Mary Fleming'.
