This box is signed 'To Joy, from Donald, with love' showing a tantalising glimpse at its personal history.
Summary
A card game called 'Lexicon' in its original box, and with instructions (1940s). The aim of the game is to create words with the lettered cards. It contains 52 cards in total. Most of them consist of a white background which has a black printed letter of the alphabet in the centre, two of the same letter in opposing corners and a red number in each corner. It also contains an additional card, called a ‘master’ or ‘joker’ card. This has a red number in two opposing corners and MASTER in the other two corners. All set in a decorated black printed oval. The brown and grey packet has Waddington's in white print at the top, ‘The game of skill excitement and interest’ at the bottom and 'Lexicon' in the centre. The word Lexicon also printed at both ends of packet. An instruction sheet with black text is included. This is torn in two parts. The reverse side of the cards have a red and white design. Total number of items is 55. Waddington's - 1922 to 1994 Founded as Waddingtons Limited as a printing business. The name then changed from Waddingtons Limited to Waddington's House of Games. In 1905 Waddington's House of Games changed their name to John Waddington Limited. In 1922 John Waddington Limited changed their name to Waddington Games. The last name change was from Waddington Games to Waddingtons. In 1971 Waddingtons bought out Alf Cooke. In 1994 Waddingtons was bought out by Hasbro.
