Summary
A long robe in the style of a Christening robe, but too narrow to be for a baby, so assumed to be for a doll. It is made of fine white linen, with long sleeves, edged at the neck and wrists with narrow lace, and elaborately decorated with broderie anglaise. The very long full skirt is gathered at the waist on to the bodice. A cotton tape drawstring is threaded through at the waist, and further fastening is provided by two fabric-covered buttons with corresponding buttonholes on the bodice. There are broad broderie anglaise pieces down the front of the bodice and in three horizontal pieces across a panel in the skirt front. The skirt panel and the hem are edged with narrower broderie anglaise. There is a small pale brown stain on the front.
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Miss B K Humphreys in 1990. Miss Humphreys' list states that this was worn by a doll in 1897.
