Summary
A baby's long, white, short sleeved cotton, robe, which is possibly a christening robe (circa 1880 to circa 1900). The robe has short embroidered sleeves and an inserted embroidered panel which extends from the bodice to the hem of the skirt. The panel has alternate rows of embroidery and pin tucks and an embroidered frill borders the panel and extends to the back of the shoulders. The bodice fastens with four tape ties which run through casing at the neck and waist. The back of the robe has three pin tucks at the hem and the embroidered panel has a scalloped hem. A note with this garment and others gifted by the same donor reads - "All are at least 80 years old, possibly 100, and were worn by at least 3 generations of the same family. They were originally worn by the children of the Mitton family (who were in business as plasterers in Burton on Trent - Anglesey Road and Beech Street)./ They were first worn by the children of the Mitton Family, one of whose daughters was mother to Mrs.Jones' husband. They have since been worn by relatives children on the Isle of Man."
