Summary
A cream coloured flannel shawl (circa 1880 to circa 1900). The shawl is made from a square piece of material, which has a scalloped embroidered edge and an embroidered flower in the bottom corner, both embroidered in the same cream coloured thread. The top corner is designed to fit over the baby's head and can be held in place by casing and tape which fits over the top of the head and the back of the neck. The tape inside the casing can then be drawn up to hold the shawl in place. The casing is drawn from the back of the shawl. The casing is on the inside of the shawl and has a piece of tape sewn onto it with the initials 'B.C.C.' There are several holes in the bottom corner of the shawl. A note with this garment and others gifted by the same donor reads - "All are at least 80 years old, possibly 100, and were worn by at least 3 generations of the same family. They were originally worn by the children of the Mitton family (who were in business as plasterers in Burton on Trent - Anglesey Road and Beech Street)./ They were first worn by the children of the Mitton Family, one of whose daughters was mother to Mrs.Jones' husband. They have since been worn by relatives children on the Isle of Man."
