Summary
A lidded box containing hand coloured scenes from a German hunting party in the Middle Ages. The backdrop is made up of three hinged sections and depicts a castle in a forest setting. The remaining pieces are hand coloured cardboard cut outs slotted into narrow pieces of wood which enable them to stand upright. The cut outs depict huntsmen on horseback holding falcons; other huntsmen some on horseback, some on foot carrying spears, cross bows and guns; trees; ladies riding side saddle and accompanying pages. Many of the figures wear elaborate court costume. The box lid is also hand coloured and in places varnished. It shows a huntman and his lady riding a single white horse led by a page. The lady holds a falcon in her right hand. Standing facing them, with his back to the viewer, is a figure carrying a spear with a net accompanied by a dog. On the paper lining of the interior of the box is the following handwritten inscription in ink - Edith. E. Crosfield/ a present on her 7th birthday/ from her loving cousins/ Mary and Margaret Crosfield/ December 1856. Total number of items is thirty
