Summary
A dissected puzzle depicting a map of the World, with its original wooden box (circa 1901 to circa 1915). The puzzle is made of wood, with the map printed in colour (black, pink, yellow, green and pale blue) on paper stuck on and varnished on one side of the puzzle, and pink paper stuck on the underside. Only the edge pieces interlock like a modern jigsaw (and two of the protruding pieces are broken but held in place by the paper backing), the others generally have wavy edges. The box is varnished on the sides and has a sliding lid which has various labels stuck on it. The largest covers the entire lid and depicts a large globe surrounded by four figures, with a fifth in the exotic background. These four appear to represent different parts of the World (Europe, Africa, etc). Above them are the words 'SUPERIOR/ DISSECTED MAPS', and in the foreground are books, an artist's palette, fruit, a rug, etc. Over the lower part of the main label are two smaller ones - one reads 'THE WORLD', and the other reads 'HAMLEY'S/ London,/ Paris and Nuremburg' with a list of London addresses (eg '202, REGENT STREET (Opposite Conduit Street).'). Also in the box is a paper copy of the completed puzzle, also colour printed on white paper. This is quite torn but complete. The box lid has a piece missing from the edge that is pulled out to open. Total number of items is fifty two
