Summary
A varnished mahogany folding chair, probably for a child made between 1911 and 1912. It has a flat wooden seat. The legs cross underneath the seat. The front legs are each made from a singular piece of wood, which runs to form the back of the chair. The legs at the back have three turned stretchers between them. The top stretcher fits into two cut out sections of wood, this wood is attached to the base of the seat. Across the top back of the chair is a shaped section of wood. On this is nailed a rectangle of brass and impressed on this is printed 'W.MILBURN JUNR.' Below this are two more sections of shaped wood running horizontally and between the two are three turned pieces of wood joining them. Note written by donor - 'We moved to the small mining and fishing village of Buckhaven in Fifeshire in March 1911 and the chair was given to me by a miner between that date and May 1912. I think there is a chance that it was made in the locality perhaps by one of his mates since the nearest large city would be Edinburgh. The miner in question was a rather odd character known as 'Shaddows' (sic) because he saw things! He gave my sister a silver mug when she was born in 1912. If not made to order, I cannot think that they were commercially produced in any number since I cannot remember seeing a chair like it in my childhood.'
