Summary
A baby's barracoat with thin shoulder straps (circa 1910 to circa 1925). The petticoat has scalloped edges down the left and right sides. The garment is well darned and has holes made by carpet beetle. All along the edge is embroidery. On the bodice front panel are three embroidered vertical lines. The skirt of the petticoat is heavily darned with holes and round stains. In the bottom left and right corners of the skirt there are embroidered flowers. The petticoat is fully open at the back with ties from the edges of the bodice and near the bottom of the skirt. There is an extra tie on one side. A note from the donor states "There were four of us, Alan born 1911, Derek born 1917, Jean (myself) born 1919 and Brian born 1925. My aunt did fine embroidery and my mother made all the clothes, I think, except the Christening robe which I know my aunt made. She did all the broderie anglaise by hand. Apart from that, I have had to guess. Jean Coates (nee Rogers)'
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Mrs Jean Coates in February 1984.
