Summary
A navy blue, woollen, child's long, belted jacket and black, woollen, knee-length breeches (circa 1910 to circa 1920). This jacket was stock from old shop (J R Heath Clothier and Draper, Nantwich), and was never worn. The jacket has a round neck and 'Peter Pan'-type collar, long sleeves pleated slightly into the buttoned cuffs, and a belt which is sewn to the side seams and fastens with a button before tucking into a 'sleeve' on the opposite end. There is a small sloping-edged pocket on the left-hand side of the chest. The jacket fastens by means of one large black, shiny button at the neck with three smaller ordinary ones lower down. Just below the top button are two similar ones as decoration (the buttonholes for the fastening ones are concealed in a fly front). There are three further (white) buttons inside the centre back of the collar and at each side of the front of the collar, for attaching a shirt-type collar. The jacket is also fastened with black cord ties with tassels at the end. It is lined with 'chintz-like' black cotton. Sewn inside the left front lower edge is a paper label which is headed with a coat of arms and 'Arte Et Labore' and reads 'Soze, Patt. No, Cutt. No. Order No. Style'. The breeches are lined with white cotton and have a button fly, a side pocket on the right and six buttons along the top edge (which is bound with black tape) for attaching braces. Also near the top edge, on the left back, is sewn a torn paper label which reads 'Pattern No. Cutting No '. Total number of items is 2.
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Mr Ian Edelman in October 1979.
