Summary

A Dutch woman's national costume consisting of the following items; A hat made of crocheted lace with a satin and velvet band. The hat has two protuding side pieces which curve upwards. These are wired into shape. The hat is also wired above the hatband. The hatband is decorated with yellow satin crosses, both the crosses and the band are bordered with blue velvet. The satin is shattered in places. Attached to the bottom of the hat is a fabric label reading 'NOV 18, 74A1195' in black ink. A satin bodice with a large square collar. This collar is cream and decorated with four, in total, painted colour illustrations depicting a windmill and a sailing ship. These illustrations are repeated on the reverse. The collar is edged in blue velvet. The main part of the bodice is green-blue and the satin has shattered in places. There are four blue velvet covered buttons on the front, with two on each side. The bodice opens at the front and fastens with metal hooks and eyes. Some of these have rusted and are possibly missing. At the bottom of the bodice are additional hooks and eyes, presumably to attach the bodice and the belt to the skirt. The sleeves of the bodice are decorated with the same design of yellow satin crosses edged in blue velvet on a cream rectangle. This rectangle has been edged in blue. The inside of the bodice is cream cotton and the back has been strengthened by two bones?. The manufacturer's name 'S.B. Watts And Co' and address is given on a label on the inside. An additional label with a number is on the inside of the front opening, the same label is repeated on the skirt. There are also several stitched laundry marks. N.B. See Full Description for further details. Total number of items is 9.

The satin is shattered in places. Attached to the bottom of the hat is a fabric label reading 'NOV 18 / 74A1195' in black ink. A satin bodice with a large square collar. This collar is cream and decorated with four, in total, painted? colour illustrations depicting a windmill and a sailing ship. The inside of the bodice is cream cotton? and the back has been strengthened by two bones?. The manufacturer's name 'S.B. WATTS AND CO' and address is given on a label on the inside. An additional label with a number is on the inside of the front opening, the same label is repeated on the skirt. There are also several stitched laundry marks?. A long satin skirt, divided up into panels with a border of blue velvet. The satin at the top of the skirt is badly shattered. At the front of the waistband are two blue velvet covered buttons. All of the waistband has small metal hooks presumably to attach the skirt to the bodice and the belt. The panels on the skirt are alternatively coloured blue-green and cream. In the bottom of each of the four cream panels is a painted? colour picture illustrating a boy and girl in front of a windmill shaking hands, the same boy and girl kissing, two boys by a fence with a windmill and sailing ship in the background and the boy and girl waving to a distant sailing ship. The bottom of the skirt is decorated with yellow satin crosses bordered with blue velvet. The skirt opens at the back and fastens with hooks and loops. There are two cotton ties at the top. The inside of the skirt has stitched laundry marks and a fabric label with printed letters and numbers, the same as the one on the bodice. A long blue-green satin belt with three parallel lines of blue velvet on the edges and middle. The belt has pointed ends and is backed with cream cotton. At the each end on the reverse is a metal hook and eye. A large white cotton petticoat with an elasticated waist. The bottom of the petticoat is decorated with three pintucks. The first pintuck is large with a lace trim at the bottom. The next pintuck is a smaller piece of lace of a different design above the last pintuck. The pintuck at the bottom has the same type of lace as the first. The petticoat is stained in places and some of the lace has come away. At the top of the waistband is a vertical ink inscription, possibly the number '22'. Two long vertical yellow satin ribbons are pinned to the petticoat with a pin. These two ribbons are lain on top of each other and possibly separate from the petticoat. A pair of brown leather clogs with wooden soles. The clogs have pointed toes and a hard leather covering at the front which points upwards. The back part of the clogs are soft brown leather which ends where the hard leather begins. Around the top of the right clog is fabric edging, this is missing from the other. Instead the edges around the left clog has a large gap where the stitching is loose. The right clog has brown cotton laces tied into four eyelets. The laces are missing from the left. The manufacturer's name is inscribed upon the bottom of each clog, the inscription on the right is the most faded. These clogs are possibly theatrical. These complete the Dutch national costume. Total number of items is nine
