Summary

A navy blue, woollen, child's suit comprising a long, belted jacket and knee-length breeches. The jacket has a round neck and 'Peter Pan'-type collar, long sleeves pleated slightly into the buttoned cuffs, and a belt which is sewn to the side seams and fastens with a button before tucking into a 'sleeve' on the opposite end. There is a small sloping-edged pocket on the left-hand side of the chest to which the left sleeve is caught with a stitch. The jacket fastens by means of one large black, shiny button at the neck with three smaller ordinary ones lower down. Just below the top button are two similar ones as decoration (the buttonholes for the fastening ones are concealed in a fly front). There are three further (white) buttons inside the centre back of the collar and at each side of the front of the collar, for attaching a shirt-type collar. This collar is made from cream-coloured cotton decorated along the edge and just inside the edge with scalloped braid. The jacket is also fastened with black cord ties with tassels at the end. It is lined with 'chintz-like' black cotton. Sewn inside the right front lower edge is a paper label which reads 'No. / Style / Size '. The breeches are lined with cream-coloured cotton and have a button fly, side pockets and six buttons along the top edge (which is bound with black tape) for attaching braces. Also near the top edge, on the left back, is sewn a torn paper label which reads 'No. / Style '. There are two black shiny buttons at the lower side seam on the left side but only one on the right - the edge has been damaged somehow and has a brown patch with a hole. There is also a small brown patch with a hole near the top of the jacket's left sleeve. Total number of items is 2.

Provenance

Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Mr Ian Edelman in September 1979.
