Summary
A baby's long cream silk robe, possibly a christening gown. The very long, full skirt is gathered on to the bodice with several rows of thread (to resemble smocking). The bodice is lined and has inset vertical bands of lace, five in the front and three in each side of the back. There is a narrow lace frill at the neck. The short puff sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and cuff where there is a band of lace with a narrow lace frill. The upper third of the skirt is plain, then there are nine narrow pin tucks, in groups of three. Below this are six broad, horizontal inset bands of lace, with a deep lace frill at the hem. At the back, the robe fastens by means of a ribbon tie (threaded through a channel at the neck) and three small mother-of-pearl buttons with loops. There are a few small brown stains.
