Summary
A very long, white, linen robe for a baby, richly decorated with broderie anglaise. It has a straight neckline and short cap sleeves made from frills of broderie anglaise. The short bodice is decorated at the front with a triangular inset panel of broderie anglaise bordered with a frill of broderie anglaise at each side, and is gathered at the back into the neck edge and the waistband. There are narrow channels formed at the neck and waist through which narrow tapes are threaded to tie at the back. The very full skirt is gathered into the waistband and has a broad inset panel at the front consisting of eleven sets of four pintucks alternating with bands of broderie anglaise, with a broderie anglaise frill at each side. Two sets of five pintucks run around the lower edge of the rest of the skirt, which has a further frill of broderie anglaise at the hem. There is a small brown stain near the top of the skirt panel at the left-hand side.
Provenance
Donated to the Museum of Childhood by Mr Henry L. Chaney in March 1977.
