Summary
A boy's white cotton short sleeved 'half-mourning' dress (circa 1871), trimmed lace and black braid. This dress belonged to a boy called Travers Buxton (born 10.12.1864) who wore them on the death of his mother in 1871. The dress has a round neck, trimmed with cotton lace and black braid and short sleeves with broderie anglaise inserts, cotton lace trim at the edges and black braid decoration. The bodice of the dress is front opening and has two metal hooks at neck and waist and four linen buttons, all fastened with thread loops. A broderie anglaise insert down the centre front of the bodice hides the opening. The skirt is gathered into the waist and there is a broderie anglaise insert above the hem. Both edges of all the lace inserts are decorated with black braid. Both front and back of the bodice and skirt are decorated with black braid, in a frogging design. The cotton fabric has a horizontal ribbed weave.
