Summary
A boy's white cotton dress with short sleeves (circa 1871). This dress belonged to a boy called Travers Buxton (born 10.12.1864) who wore them on the death of his mother in 1871. It is possible that this dress was cut down from a longer Christening gown before the mother died. The front of the bodice has a V shaped insertion of embroidery and braiding edged with broderie anglaise which continues on round the neck to the back opening. The sleeves are edged with the broderie anglaise. The gathered skirt has a deep hem and a deep tuck just above. Two lengths of broderie anglaise are attached to the waist and flare out to the hem. The back opening is closed by three fabric buttons and a hook and eye at the waist, the hook is missing. There is a drawstring at the neck. There appears to have been a band of braid at the top of the skirt. Remains of stitching visible.
Provenance
This dress is part of a set of mourning clothes belonging to a boy called Travers Buxton (born 10.12.1864) who wore them on the death of his mother in 1871.
