Summary
A child's three tiered Viyella (a wool/silk mixture) cream coloured cape or 'Pelisse' (circa 1895 - 1910). It was probably used as a Christening cape. The first layer consists of a long cape which is gathered onto a yoke and fastened, down the front, by two metal hooks and thread loops and a pair of satin ribbons, one of which is missing. The cape is lined with cream cotton. The next layer, which is also gathered onto a yoke, comes half way down the first layer and has a deep band of cream coloured embroidered bunches of grapes and a buttonholes scalloped edge. This layer is lined with cream satin. The top layer, gathered as before, has the same deep design of grape bunches and a scalloped edge and is lined with cream satin. All three layers are attached at the neck edge which also has a frill with a similar band of embroidery. There are two ribbons, very frayed, at the front of the neck. A tape for hanging the cape is attached to the back of the neck.
