Summary
A child's two tiered cream coloured Viyella (a wool/silk mixture) cape, probably a Christening cape (circa 1910 to circa 1915). The first layer is lined with cream silk and has a pair of cream ribons at the neck and a pair further down the front. There is a wide band of ruched cream satin down the front on each side which continues on around the hem. The upper cape, which is also lined with the same material, has a similar band of ruching which is attached all round the edge. Both layers have lace edging sewn to the ruching. The neck edge has a narrow band of ruching with a lace edging. There is some sign of insect damage (possibly moth). There is a red stain on the main cape.
Provenance
Donated to the National Trust in 1973 by Mr Gladwyn Turbutt. A collection of mid 19th to early 20th century children's and babies' garments (also three black and white photographic studio prints of children from the family). All these items came from the donor's family home.
