Summary
A quilted, cream silk bonnet for a baby - possibly from a set with a coat or cloak (circa 1880 to circa 1899). Possibly commercially made/bought. The frame around the face consists of several hoops of wire held inside the fabric between rows of stitching, in two sets, the outer one having a fabric frill round the edge. The rest of the bonnet is quilted, with silk as the top layer, linen backing and cotton wadding between. This consists of many patterns of machine stitching. There is a 'W' shaped flap down the back, also quilted with many machine-stitched patterns, and drawstring tapes at the back neck for adjusting the fit, and a ribbon tie at each lower edge of the shaping hoops. There is a fringe along the entire edge of the flap. The bonnet is slightly dirty and there are a few small brown stains.
