Summary
A baby's white fine linen first shirt (circa 1850 to circa 1900). The shirt opens at the front and has two flaps which extend above the neckline at the front and back, these are folded down to protect the baby's skin from coarser material which is wrapped around its body, over the top of the open shirt. The shoulder splits, flaps and sleeves are trimmed with lace.
Provenance
Donated to the National Trust in 1973 by Mr Gladwyn Turbutt. A collection of mid 19th to early 20th century children's and babies' garments (also three black and white photographic studio prints of children from the family). All these items came from the donor's family home.
