Summary
A pair of breeches for a child ('Turkey' red), made from red wool, lined with cream-white cotton (circa 1899). The front piece opens downwards as a flap, and has four vertical buttonholes along the top edge. There are four more vertical buttonholes along the top back edge. The top edges and side front (opening) edges are lined with broad strips of red satin, the stitching of which has come undone on the one inside the back top edge. The fabric is quite dirty on the outside, and very dirty on the inside, and where repairs have been made, at the seams or the top of a buttonhole, they are done in blue thread. They are well-worn. The associated jacket is recorded separately as inventory number - 658032.
Provenance
Donated to the National Trust in 1973 by Mr Gladwyn Turbutt. A collection of mid 19th to early 20th century children's and babies' garments (also three black and white photographic studio prints of children from the family). All these items came from the donor's family home.
