Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Edward Venables Vernon Harcourt (1757-1847) as Archbishop of York by Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (Bristol 1769 – London 1830), 1823. A full-length portrait, standing, turned slightly to the right, gazing to the left, in surplice and scarlet robes and white cape, in his left hand a black hat, his right hand at hip, columns behind on high stylobate and red velvet drapes to left and right. Brother of Henry 3rd Lord Vernon, assumed the name of Harcourt on inheriting the Harcourt Estates. He was the second son of George Venables Vernon, 1st Lord Vernon by his third wife Martha Harcourt sister of Simon, Earl Harcourt. He was Archbishop of York between 1807 and 1847.
Provenance
By family descent in the Vernon collection; transferred from HM Treasury to the National Trust after the death of 9th Lord Vernon (1889-1963), on the 30th October 1984.
