Summary
A set of seven walnut-framed chairs, part of a set of ten pieces of walnut-framed seat furniture, English, circa 1715 - 1730, the set also comprising three sofas [NT 652692.1 - .3]. Each chair having a rectangular back with toprail with raised and scrolled over central section, the bottom edge arched. The seat raised to the front on a pair of moulded cabriole legs, the rear legs block and column-turned and sharply raked. The legs joined by a moulded and wavy 'H'-shaped stretcher and a high rear turned stretcher. -- Upholstered in modern blue fabric with a gilt metal thread fringe. The sofas once upholstered in claret velvet. In 1905, one sofa visible in a Country Life picture of the south-east end of the Long Gallery where it appears to be upholstered in fabric stitched with a pattern of sprays of flowers.
Provenance
Acquired by the Treasury from 10th Lord Vernon in lieu of death-duties after the death of Francis Lawrence William Venables-Vernon, 9th Lord Vernon (1889 - 1963) and transferred from the Treasury to the National Trust on the 30th October 1984.
