Summary

Oil painting on board, Cattle in the Italian Alps (recto); The Artist's Garden in Surrey (verso) by Randolph Caldecott (Chester 1846 – St Augustine, Florida 1886). Caldecott was an illustrator and watercolourist who drew for Punch, Graphic and many children's books. He knew Beatrix Potter and her father. His style is said to have influenced her. Frame for 641991.1 - Oil painting on board, Cattle in the Italian Alps (recto); The Artist's Garden in Surrey (verso) by Randolph Caldecott (Chester 1846 – St Augustine, Florida 1886). The painting shows three cows in a field with mountains in the background. A lady stands behind the cows. The frame is a light-stained wooden frame with line decoration around the inner and outer edges with a water-gilded slip aperture.

Provenance

Bought at Christie's after artist's death by Beatrix Potter's father, who acquired numerous watercolours and possibly a few oils; thence by inheritance after the death of Beatrix Potter's mother; bequeathed to National Trust by Beatrix Potter, Mrs William Heelis, 1944
