Summary
A mother-of-pearl inlaid walnut(?) chest, probably Indo-Portuguese, South East Asia, possibly early-mid 17th century. The front has three square panels each carved with flowers,either side of the central panel is a tree of life. Hinged lid inlaid with circular designs and IHS at centre. Inside has narrow lidded compartments at either end and rack with three horizontal slits running along the back. Underside of lid has carved checkerboard at centre.

Gifted to the National Trust by Field Marshal Sir Archibald and Lady Montgomery Massingberd in 1944.
