Summary
Coloured stipple engraving, Mirth and Melancholy (Miss Wallis, afterwards Mrs James Campbell, fl.1789-1814) (after George Romney) by George Keating (Ireland 1762 – London 1842) Entitled 'Prudence'. Two women in the mouth of a cave, three-quarter length in flowing dress, one attempts to dissuade the other (who looks back over her right shoulder at the spectator) from joining a dance round a maypole in the distance, right, on a hill. An hourglass sits bottom left. Published 1799. Inscribed in pencil on reverse of back panel- 'Mrs Jordan and Lady Hamilton'. The original is in Petworth CMS: 486161
