Summary
Print, coloured aquatint, The capture of 'La Tribune' by HMS 'Unicorn', 8 June 1796 after Francis Chesham (1749 - London 1806). Naval engagement during the Revolutionary Wars. Black glass mount. Label on giltwood frame reads-- 'Capture of La Tribune French Frigate of 44 guns by HMS Unicorn of 32 guns,Capt Thos Williams June 8 1796. Partially illegible printed label of newspaper report on reverse reads-- 'LA TRIBUNE STRIKING TO THE UNICORN Extract from Captain Williams' letter of His Majesty's Ship Unicorn to Admiral Kingsmill at Sea June 10 1796. AT half past 10 o'clock at night,having....miles we shor(?) up alongside our antagonist, gave him both sides for 35 minutes when on clear......(rest of line missing) quarter was close hauled,attempting by a master Manavure(sic) to cross our stem and gain the wind- this was happily prevented by our heaving all aback,and giving the ship strong stern way,by which we passed her bow,regained our situation,and renewed the attack. The effect of our fire soon put an end to all manoevure for the enemy's ship was completely dismantled her fire ceased,and all further resistance appearing ineffectual,they called out,they had surrendered.'
