Summary
Pencil and grey wash drawing on paper, James Boswell (1740-1795) by George Langton 1772 - Langton, Co. Durham 1819). Mounted in an oval. The mount is cut to reveal the inscription beneath the drawing written in a scroll; 'J Boswell, drawn from nature by George Langton Esq. of Lang.N' A full-length portrait standing, profile to left in frock coat, a stick held in both hands behind his back. Boswell was a friend of Bennet Langton, George Langton's father. Reproduced as a frontispiece in Boswell's "Life of Johnson" edited by Croker vol X 2nd edition 1835. Reproduced in "A New Portrait of James Boswell" by Tinker and Pottle plate 5 1927 and in "Country Life" Nov 12th 1943 - 1944 inventory
