Summary
Print, hand-coloured engraving, The Iron Bridge, Coalbrookdale, from the Madely Side (after George Robertson) by James Fittler RA (London 1758 – London 1835). c.1780. Designed by the architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, cast by Abraham Darby III at his ironworks in Coalbrookdale and opened in 1779, this is the first iron bridge in the world, Due to the settlement of the masonry abutment the adjacent masonry arch was replaced c.1805 by the present iron side span.
