Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Hallam FRS (1777-1859) by Thomas Phillips RA (1770-1845). A portrait of Henry Hallam as a middle-aged man, turned slightly to the left, gazing to the left, short hair, clean shaven and wearing a black coat, black stock and high collar, whose tips appear above his stock. Dark background. Historian and Fellow of the Royal Society; married Julia Maria Elton (1783-1840) the daugher of Revd Sir Abraham Elton, 5th Bt (1755-1842) and his first wife Eliza Durbin (1756-1822); their son Arthur Henry Hallam (1811-1833) was the subject of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem 'In Memoriam' .
