Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Horses Watering (taken in to bait) by Sir Edwin Landseer (London 1802 - London 1873), 1840. A horseman, a red-coated trooper in 17th century dress is mounted on a black horse at the fountain, in an old courtyard, to left, and holding a grey alongside, whilst a girl is seated with four dogs to the right. Some alterations (pentimenti) have been made to the man's leg and around the grey/white horse's right back leg.

Owned by J. Marshall in 1840; given to the National Trust with Derwent and St Herbert’s islands by Denis Marshall (d. 1956) in 1951
