Summary
One of a pair of French hand held face screens consisting of a flat, elongated octagonal board and turned ebonised handle. 3-leaved sprig printed on pink paper, cut out to reveal rotating discs printed with character faults. Applied gilt border, stamped with classical motifs. Printed below the central leaf design: 'Nous plaisons plus souvent dans le commerce de la vie, par nos defauts que par nos bonnes qualites. La Rochefoucault 99e. Maxime'. Circa 1820.

Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
