Summary
Coronet. Velvet and ermine. a) Silver and gilt metal (?) coronet (six spheres); b) silk velvet of crimson silk warp and weft; crimson silk warp cut pile. cushion. a) Bullion worked tassel, height 60 mm; b) white ermine fur; c) two metal pins. Ivory silk 'taffeta'. Centre cushion with trim a), within coronet with ermine trim, lined within, two pins pierce coronet to secure to hair. Found in trunk carefully wrapped and tissued by Lady Berwick. As the velvet is the same as that used for a velvet placket this perhaps suggests an earlier Robe used at Queen Victoria's Coronation (?). The Hallmark on Lord Berwick's Coronet could possibly be 1819-1899. Could this have been used at the same time? See oil painting of 8th Lady Berwick wearing the Coronation robes by William Bernard Reid.
Provenance
8th Lady Berwick collection; bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972).
