Summary
Crimson purple velvet coronation train. Crimson silk velvet. Black silk warp; purple silk weft; magenta silk warp cut pile. a) Ermine cape (capelet) collar, two rows (bars) tips 390 mm deep; b) white fur (Miniver pure) border 60 mm; c) two bullion worked tassels (one broken) 33 cm. White satin weave facings as on Open Robe (ATT/TC/195/10). Curved train bordered with trim b), trim c) either side of cape, two hooks either side to attach to robe eyes on shoulder. Lined throughout. Almost certainly a later re-lining. Almost three widths. See oil painting of 8th Lady Berwick wearing the Coronation robes by William Bernard Reid.
Provenance
Probably part of the Coronation Robes used by Ellen, 7th Lady Berwick (d.1934) for the 1902 Coronation of Edward VII; adapted for use by Edith Teresa, 8th Lady Berwick and bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972).
