Summary
Crimson purple velvet coronation robe (kirtle). Crimson silk velvet. Black silk warp; purple silk weft; magenta silk warp cut pile. White fur borders 40 mm; 60 mm; partly scalloped. (Miniver Pure). White satin weave facings. Open robe, hand and machine sewn. Fur trimmings to neck, down front (scalloped on skirt) and hem. 3 bands on short sleeves; satin facings to front and at hem. Hooks and eyes to front, unpicked seams visible on bodice. 2 metal eyes on shoulders for train. See oil painting of 8th Lady Berwick wearing the Coronation robes by William Bernard Reid. Probably made for Ellen, wife of the 7th Baron Berwick, for the Coronation of Edward VII in 1902 which she attended with her nephew Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick. The re-sewing of the bodice suggests alterations for 1937 and 1953 Coronations, for the 8th Lady Berwick, becoming smaller and smaller. The facings are part of later alterations. The skirt seams have also been resewn.
