Summary
Two beige linen lace borders. Beige linen thread. Bobbin lace, tape with plaited mesh ground. Design; free flowing. a) Straight footing and heading, cut one end, finished one end. b) Straight footing and heading, cut either end. Made in Flanders, 18th century. Handwritten note by Lady Berwick on envelope reads: 'Bit of Old Lace to be mended in Venice'.
Provenance
Found in envelope, with ATT/TC/186, in white box with letter and Note. Label on Box A) 'Old lace to be repaired'. B) 'Burano lace - Mrs Hulton' (only Burano piece identified is ATT/TC/156). Found in box 14 pieces of lace ATT/TC/181-194. 8th Lady Berwick collection; bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972).
